As a* Payroll Accountantfor our *Payroll teamyou will ensure the proper accounting for transactions that are critical to the operations of the Premera group of companies. Reporting s to a Finance Manager, you will perform month-end closing processes, including journal entries, monthly reconciliations and variance analyses of complex general ledger accounts for Premera Blue Cross and its subsidiaries, a $3 billion group of companies. You will also be part of a particularly exciting, ground floor opportunity to help us implement a new payroll and timekeeping system for Premera. You will work with a dedicated group of professionals that has a wealth of knowledge and lives by our company values.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop, analyze and interpret complex accounting data

  • Perform monthly close processes including journal entries, reconciliations and variance analyses

  • Provide support for research and analysis and determines the appropriate accounting and procedures for diverse business transactions

  • Participate in the implementation and system testing for WorkDay as well as ongoing legislative updates

  • Support external auditors on annual GAAP audit and benefit audits

  • Consult and provide direction to various departments throughout the company on payroll accounting related matters.

  • Complete all payroll tax research, set up, filing and W-2 processing

  • Seek out opportunities for process improvement or to gain efficiencies and take lead role to implement

  • Support and process end to end payroll

  • Ensure all new hires, terms, medical leaves garnishments, on-line checks, bonus payments, gift certificates, fringe benefits, severance and other miscellaneous entries are set up accurately and processed timely

  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations

  • Analyze new laws, proposed laws and regulations which govern payroll

What you’ll bring:

  • Bachelor's degree or four (4) years’ work experience

  • Four (4) years' of general accounting experience –OR- two (2) years of public accounting experience

  • CPP Certification is strongly preferred

  • CPA or MBA would be nice to have

  • Experience in PeopleSoft, Workday or similar application is desirable

  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, payroll laws and tax regulations

  • Understanding of general accounting functions including GL, AP, payroll and account reconciliations

  • Collaborative problem solving skills including recommendation for and implementation of improvements

  • Strong analytical and documentation skills with attention to detail

  • Proficiency with Excel, Word and other applications

  • Strong organization and prioritization skills

  • Understanding of HR Health and Welfare plans and retirement administration
